Concealed Carry?
Chris J asked:
What are your views on concealed carry? I think it is a wonderful idea. Just think if one student or teacher had a gun at VT, what might have happened. Or if people who are mugged or raped. i doubt that the criminal would get very far if even try if he knew that the person carried a gun. I know people think that if you arm everybody that you are just giving guns to nuts and crazies. i have thought of a solution for this problem. everyone who wants to carry a gun must first pass gun safety and have a psychiatric evaluation before being allowed to handle a gun. Just think about the possibilities of good concealed carry could bring about. A lower crime rate would be the biggest one. What I want to know is what are your views and ideas on this subject? be honest i want to know what you think about proposed idea are there any flaws or things that could be improved. Tell me what you really think.
Thank you my good man. If you don't believe me just read the first answer to this question and there is a great example of what could be.

There was a mid-west city (small town) that was on a news show like 20-20 a while back where the town passed a law that everyone had to own a gun. The crime rate dropped drastically.

Talk about asking for trouble! Would you give one to every postal worker, too? It would be like the old wild west, with people shooting others “by mistake”. Do you think the gang- bangers will volunteer to take gun safety class or have a psychiatric evaluation?

The gang bangers already carry concealed weapons. I think that is the whole point. If thieves and murderers know that everyone they would like to rob is carrying a weapon then they are less likely to commit violent crimes. At least that is the theory….i’m sure that there are plenty of inner-city police officers who would disagree since most gang bangers are armed and they still kill each other like crazy.
My personal view is that every system in this country is flawed and your concealed carry program would be as well. there would still be plenty of people who aren’t worthy and are unarmed citizens surrounded by those worthy of the priveledge of carrying a concealed weapon.
Also, who would be making the decision whether or not someone is worthy? Could neocons take control and only allow other neocons the right or could democrats do the same? Could there be a fee attached that allows the wealthy the right that a poor person deserves but can’t afford? What about all of those victims in the war on drugs who lost their rights as a result of a drug conviction….will they be allowed to carry weapons?
I think it would only work if there were absolutely no restrictions or fees of any kind…..at least everyone would be free to exercise their 2nd amendment right to keep and bare arms!!!!!

An armed population is a polite population.
just take a look at the parts of the US with the highest crime rates and those areas will have the toughest gun control laws. See N.Y. N. Y and Washington D.C. for examples. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that if honest citizens are armed, and the criminals don’t know who is and isn’t armed, crime will drop. The way things are the criminals have the advantage, they are breaking the laws anyway, why not break one more. And they know the courts are ineffective.

Well, lets face it, they have done away with corporal punishment, so what is a poor teacher to do?

I live in Kennesaw, GA (Metro Atlanta) – and by law every head of household (that isn’t a felon, mentally unfit, or has a reasonable objection) must own a firearm and ammunition – and know how to use it. It’s unenforceable, but its still on the books after more than two n a half decades. Greenleaf, Idaho has adopted a similar ordinance (if that’s the town the other poster refers to).
I can say there’s no crime in my neighborhood. I don’t, however, think it wise for anyone to carry concealed firearms on a college campus (or on any school grounds).
The laws for carrying concealed weapons vary by state, but 67.5% of the US population lives in “right to carry” areas.

i don’t think people should have to gave a gun if they don’t want to. that goes against some personal beliefs, after all we live in a ‘free’ nation.
things can always be improved, but i think it’s pretty reasonable how things are set up now. a lot of people that go crazy probably do it well after they purchase their firearm. besides, it’s not hard to get a gun illegally on the streets. i could get a 9mm autoloader on the street for $100 when i was 13, and a .22 autoloader for $60.
that’s a lot cheaper than buying one legally, obviously. that’s not the point though, the point is if someone really wants a gun they can still get one even if the law doesn’t permit.
