Going to be buying a HK45. Advice please?

tactical holster
South117 asked:

Going to be purchasing the full-size HK45 double-action pistol along with a conceal permit. Just a few questions before I make my purchase. This will be for day-to-day concealment and home-defense when in my residence.

What brand name and type of ammo is best for this firearm? Stopping power is key.

I heard of a tactical version of this gun, what does the tactical modification do to the gun and how is it better/worse?

Is there a huge difference in day to day carrying between it and it's smaller counterpart that I would notice?

I have also heard about a recoil insert that reduced the recoil massively, is it already built into the gun or was the recoil I saw in action an add-on?

How much would a flashlight, laser sight, silencer and a x3 ammo pouch with 2 spare magazines run... ballpark? I intend to buy the light/laser/silencer at a later date.

Finally how much would a slim holster with a simple metal button strap cost, do they make them to fit it when the laser/light are attached?

Thanks for your time and help everyone, I am fixing to spend alot of money on this gun so I want to double check my homework before I go to the gun store.

The HK45 is a nice weapon but in experiance a little rough shooting. I personally have fouund that the “1911″ style 45 pistols shoot better and are more accurate. Either way, the best 45 ammo I have found is Winchester brand. A little more expensive but worth it.

That is plenty of pistol. Maybe to much for concealed carry in the summer. When I think concealed carry it is a pocket auto or the S&W bodyguard. As for ammo maybe Glaser safety slugs? Or any lighter 200 grains and under hollow point that is reliable in your gun. The .45 earned it’s reputation as a man stopper with plain old round nose bullets. It is a big slug and doesn’t really have to expand to do major damage.

Good choice. I carry an HK USP compact in .45 ACP. You have stated that this gun will be for everyday carry. A full size HK USP is going to be a little bulky for concealed carry. I find that the compact is just fine for my needs, and the 3.5 inch barrel keeps the gun accurate out to 50 yards. I don’t practice beyond 50 yards so I cannot speak to accuracy beyond that distance.

As for ammunition, I practice on targets with Winchester 230 grain FMJ rounds. For carry and defense, I load Remington Golden Sabre 230 grain High Performance Jacket. If this load is good enough for the FBI, then it is good enough for me. I have not experienced any feeding issues with the Golden Sabres. That is not to say that any round will load perfectly, however. Federal hollow points keep jamming on me, at a rate of around one failure to feed every 20 rounds or so.

The only modifications I have made to my HK are the addition of tritium sights. I like their high visibility. Adding a laser and a tactical light are just going to increase the weight and bulk that you are carrying, and honestly, how many times are you going to need to use a tactical light in a self defense situation? As for a silencer, that would be illegal for you unless you have been licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, paid your tax stamp, have your tax stamp on your person at all times, and your local sheriff has signed off on your Class III paperwork.

For a holster, I would go with an inside-the-waistband rig, carried at 4 or 5 O’Clock. I had to move up a waist size in my jeans to accomodate the gun, but it’s worth it. So long as I am wearing a sport coat then no one is the wiser. Forget about the extra mag pouches as well. This is for defense, not storming the beaches.

I have not heard about the “recoil insert”. It sounds like a waste of money, in my humble opinion. The recoil on my compact is not bad at all. I can fire an entire magazine without stopping to reacquire my target, and barrrel rise is minimal. It just takes practice.

SIlencer requires BATF forms, background check and pay a 200 dollar tax. The suppressor is under a grand. Laser sights are under 200 bucks. You don’t need a recoil reducer. Don’t get the tactical model unless you are going to suppress it cause you need the threaded barrel.

I would advise get the gun in the LEM configuration so there is no external safety so its like a glock.

For a flashlight it depends, anywhere from fifty bucks to like 300 bucks.

You can def conceal this gun, I conceal a similar sized gun plus reloads, a back up gun, knives every day of the week in a shorts and a tee shirt. I do it in a grey area of the law and have done it in areas where I would be charged with a felony if I was caught so yes you can conceal it.

Check out raven concealment systems for a rig that will accommodate the handgun with a light and a laser.
