How do I know what size holster to buy?
maxine asked:
I am looking to buy a shoulder holster for someone for Christmas (it's what he wants) and I am not sure how to go about it. It is a Ruger 22, and I know I have to take into account the size of the barrel. But does that include the entire length of the gun or just the barrel that extends off the front? It looks like the part that extends is about 3", but the entire length is about 6". Any suggestions as to what kind to get? I do not know a lot about guns..Help

The holster manufacturer needs to know what type of gun and the length of the barrel. They know how to make a holster to fit your gun with this information.

Midway USA allows you to search for holsters by make and model of the firearm:***694***12659***
I pointed you towards the Ruger listing, and a holster for a Mk 2 should fit a Mk 3 or 4, too, and it sounds like he has one of those.
Unfortunately, not all pictures depict the actual product, but they should at least be close.

many of the manufactures will allow you to search for holsters per gun type.

Almost every holster comes in a package. On the back, it has a list of what that particular holster fits. On the barrel size, it just wants to know what length the barrel only is on your particular gun. In otherwords, it will list that it fits a Ruger .22 (by model) with a 4″ barrel etc. Barrels on handguns are measured from the end of the barrel back to the front of the frame of the firearm.
Good luck and shoot safe

Uncle Mikes make a very nice black nylon shoulder rig for the. 22 Autos with a barrel length from 4″- 6″ in length. Mis way has them . The right hand model stock # is 111-761, and the left hand model is # 279-770.
Check them out at midwayusa.com.
My brother in law has one of these and he loves it.

I just measured a few of my my Ruger Mark Is and IIs….the barrel on one that extends from the gun is about 3.25 inches, which is what it sounds like you have and the shortest barrel made for this Ruger.
Now, this is officially a 4.75 inch barrel and some places list it as a 4 and 7/8s inch.

If you plan on getting from a gun store ask them if you can bring the gun in and try it in the holsters, most of them will let you.
