How do I select a gun belt? (for CCW)?

paddle holster
mousenuckles asked:

I'm looking for a belt under $40 if possible. I have seen so many diffrent types though its left me clueless. Ive never seen a velcro or buckleless belt put on so im not clear on how they work. Don Hume has some good looking belts that are (at $40) at the top of my price range. Another thing im not certain on is how much support i will need. I will be purchacing a Fobus Roto holster and double mag pouch for my Sigma 40VE when I purchace my new belt. I didn't know if the design of the paddle demanded a little less of a firm belt or not. I find most all leather belts from department stores dont get past my useage muchless with a gun too. Any advice would be cool. I know all this is kind of vague just use your experience to nudge me in the right direction.... not tell me what a piece of crap my gun is or that having 2 extra mags is dumb. Thanks in advance to all serious contributors.

look into the blackhawk belts. I own and use this one in OD.

If you will look at the link you will see that it is not a designated pistol belt and is worn as a regular belt.

Blackhawk isn;t the way to go for CCW, Blackhawk makes police and military gear, NOT ccw gear.
If you want to carry CCW the last thing you want is a gunbelt, a gunbelt screams ” I have a gun” which is detrimental to ccw. You want an IWB holster that a simple t shirt can cover. Look into fobus iwb holsters, you’ll be surprised how comfortable and concealable they are.

I use Fobus paddle holster and single Mag paddle for my Glock 22 for CCW carry. And I have been using my Basket Weave Ranger belt from Cabelas for this combo for about 7 years with no complaints. The belt is firm without being stiff and is wearing beautifully. It cost $23.00 so I figure it’s a bargain but Don Hume makes great products too.

I got a Uncle Mike side kick holster for my Glock I have a sub compact and a compact model. as far as belts I don’t have a special belt for my gun holster. My holster is designed for inside the pants concealment. its good and comfortable. as far as your magazines I would recommend the Fobus mag holster. But the Uncle Mike Side Kick is the way to go.

They are higher than your $40 limit, but probably make the best CCW / dress belt around.

DeSantis makes a good belt as well. I have seem some outfit on E-Bay selling them for about $35.00. Just type in DeSantis belts and they should display quickly.

A little something about the Fobus holsters. I have four. Two are paddles and to are belt holsters. Both of the paddles broke. One was for my J-frame S&W, I was practicing drawing the gun when the gun snagged and the paddle broke. The other paddle was for my full size H&K USP .45 auto. I was working out of uniform and in the station when we got an emergency call. My partner was driving so I jumped into the passenger side of the car. the butt of the gun caught the door frame, paddle snapped, and my gun and holster hit the pavement.

My concealed carry rigs are now DeSantis IWB holsters for the J-frame and a taurus 745 auto.

a normal belt can be used for ccw.the belts you named are for police officers.i find that the best i used my entire career was a pancake style.it is very comfortable and fits snugly against the body.good holsters are very experience.there is a pace call idaho leather company.they make a shoulder holster to custom fit you. the holster is a pancake style and can be removed to wear with a bely. the ammo holder can also be removed.this is the best i have seen. i am a 5th generation retired police officer and you will not find a better combination.it will cost about $190.they have other kinds also. just go look at everything on their web site.

When choosing a belt to support the weapon and the holster, you need to keep a few things in mind

1 – what type of pants are going to be worn?

If Mainly jeans, etc, you might be able to get a way with a thick, heavier gague belt. I use one that has two teeth on the buckle, and is of a fairly thick leather…works quite well

If Dressier, this setup may not be appropriate, and need to get more of the shiny, heavy gague police type belt from one of the suggestions above.

2 – How thick are the loops on the pants you are going to wear

Some belts are made for X thickness… and may be too tight to fit through the loops of the belt.

3 – What type of retention system are you using on the Holster.

If a Pancake style…not really too much needed here.. but still prefer the thicker belts.

If IWB, need a good heavy belt..sometimes there is a metal cord in the center… really good

If OWB, belt attached… similar to the IWB setup.

I have had great luck with a Double tooth thicker belt. Keeps the weapon nice and tight to the side. Looks like a normal belt (because it is) and has served well for quite a few years
