Taurus PT709 Holsters
The Taurus PT709 Slim was debuted by Taurus at the 2009 SHOT Show. This weapon was loosely based on the success and features of two other Taurus weapons: the Millennium Pro series and the Taurus PT-745.
The Millennium Pro series has become a best seller for Taurus based on it's size, features, and price. The PT-745 had a slightly different story. Produced and marketed by Taurus in 2006, the PT-745 was their first attempt at a single stack handgun built for concealed carry. The 745 was chambered in the potent 45 ACP and featured a mag that carried 5 rounds. It was a great CCW weapon except for the caliber. Don't get me wrong, I love 45 ACP as it's my favorite round. The problem with the 745 was the size and weight of the pistol in relation to the round. It was and is a bear to shoot. The recoil is considerable and barrel flip is pretty aggressive as well. Shooters loved the size and concealability of the 745, but wanted the same package in a slightly less powerful round.
Enter the 709 Slim in 2009. Only chambered in 9mm, this pistol has almost the same dimensions as the 745. The 709 Slim originally only came in a blued model, but in 2010, Taurus expanded the line and offered a stainless steel model and a more expensive titanium model. The titanium model cuts about 2 ounces off the overall unloaded weight, bringing it down to a very respectable 17 ounces.
The 709 Slim features a polymer compound frame that is reinforced with steel inserts. The magazine carries 6 so the max round count is 7+1. The 709 is designed as a single action weapon, but also has the patented Taurus "Double Strike" feature. This feature is really neat. in the event of a non-firing round, the trigger automatically resets letting you try to fire the round again with no action on your part. In most handguns, you would have to eject the round, and rechamber a new one. Taurus research indicates that, in about 90% of the cases, the non-fired round will fire on the second primer strike.
Finding a holster for the 709 Slim isn't that difficult anymore as many of the well known production holster companies are now producing holsters for it. It's small size and weight make it a great candidate for concealed carry. I've gotten some e-mails asking how it works for pocket carry, and my personal opinion, is that it's just a little too big for carrying in the pocket. I think there are better choices on the market for pocket carry.
