Trapped in a tight space (like an elevator) with a bad guy, would you rather have a knife or a gun?

pocket holster
Sara W asked:

Either weapon you choose is holstered or in your pocket or coat or whatever.

And why?

Knife. Too easy of a choice. When your in such a confined space it’s going to be alot harder with a pistol.

Definitely a knife. Fewer things can go wrong, and using a pistol in such confined space is a bad idea.

I would have both available as I carry both at all times. THat then would depend on the situation at hand , the weapon they have and whats beyond the elevator, Lots of thinking in a split second decision/ Thats why it pays to be aware and have a game plan always.

    21 foot rule.

In the world of police work there is what has become known as the ‘21-feet’ rule. Simply put, if a person has a knife and is 21 feet away from you, and he decides to initiate an attack, he can easily cover the distance in 1.5 seconds.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU?

    Consider this:
If you have a holstered gun and you are very well trained in a quick draw, you can likely draw and fire your weapon in a 1-to-1.1 seconds. The second shot goes off about 2/10’s of a second later. The third shot is released in another 2/10’s of a second.

Therefore, if someone standing 21 feet away attacks you with a knife, he will strike his target in 1.5 seconds. You, on the other hand, in that same 1.5 seconds are lucky to draw and fire one or maybe two shots.

It gets even worse when you factor in reaction time.

It can take as much as 1/2 second to react to the attack mentally and make the decision to counterattack with your weapon.

And just imagine if you’re a civilian or off-duty in civilian clothes and your weapon is carried concealed. That’s probably going to add another 2/10 or 3/10 of a second to your draw.

Having a knife or firearm not drawn and ready in an elevator is going to cause you a great deal of trouble.

But to answer your question, I would still go with a firearm. At worst I can beat him with it. Most people are not trained in knife fighting and end up getting cut themselves.

Getting attacked in an elevator is a bad day.

    I choose the knife.

First it is quiet when it is loaded.
Second it is quiet when the safety is clicked off
third it never needs to be re-loaded.
Fourth it is always going to work it never jams
fifth Most law enforcement don’t get upset when they search you and fine one on you.

    I think that’s enough

I admit that I’ve never shot a pistol in my life, but I would have thought firing a pistol in an elevator would leave you with some serious (even if only temporary) hearing damage.

Without even considering all the other pros and cons that’s enough to make me think I’ll take the knife please.
