The Ruger P85 was the first pistol in the P series. Originally developed in 1985, the P85 didn’t go into production until 1987. Ruger developed the P85 to compete in the U.S. Army evaluations for a 9mm weapon replacement for the venerable 1911. Unfortunately, Ruger didn’t complete the design and testing before the military trials started so the P85 was not considered.
Chambered for the 9mm, the P85 featured aluminum frame and stainless steel parts. The weapon was lightweight and carried 15+1 rounds. It became a very popular design for Ruger and would serve as the design basis for a series of popular P series weapons.
